Since Sam and I only had a quick overnight stop in Amsterdam before flying home to Atlanta, we decided to stay near the Schiphol airport to save time and hassle in the morning.
By the time we arrived at the citizenM Schiphol Airport—much later than we intended—we were completely exhausted. We had planned to catch the first train from Brussels to Amsterdam and spend the afternoon at the Rijksmuseum admiring the subtle complexities of Baroque art while nibbling on stroopwafels. Instead we ended up stranded in Antwerp for three hours amid heavy wind and rain and then on an overcrowded train that stopped every 15-minutes for no obvious reason. During each of these unscheduled stops, the conductor would announce, “We have stopped in the middle of the tracks.” And while I admit that I’ve attempted to unlock my apartment with a car remote on multiple occasions, even I was able to work that much out on my own.
Lucky for us, the hotel ended up being the perfect place to unwind after a long and frustrating day. The citizenM is a haven tech-loving travelers who want comfort, convenience, and style at an affordable price.
The citizenM is located at the Schiphol Airport. Though it is outside the terminal, a paved, sheltered path makes walking from the airport to the hotel super easy, even while lugging heavy bags.
The check-in process was quick and painless (basically everything our train ride from Brussels wasn’t). The hotel is equipped with plenty of self-serve kiosks where guests can manage their own check-in and avoid waiting in a long line at the reception desk.
A cool added bonus is that the room keys can be used as luggage tags after checkout.
The hotel caters to tech-loving hipsters, and the rooms are no exception. Though compact, they are ultra-modern and space-efficient.
Sam loved that he could control everything in the room with the complimentary iPad. When we wanted to go to bed, all we had to do was select “Nighttime Mode” and the blackout blinds lowered and the lights dimmed. I know what you’re thinking. How lazy are we that we can’t get out of bed and turn off a few lights? Well, quite. But that’s beside the point. The point is that we didn’t have to because the iPad was basically like a tiny butler. And it was programed with a wide selection of complimentary movies (which is more than I can say about most butlers).
The room also had a super comfortable king-sized bed (a rarity in Europe!), a desk/work station, and a wall-to-wall window where we could watch the planes take off and land.
Luggage storage space was available in a drawer under the bed and in a cubbyhole by the door. Since we were traveling with only our backpacks, we had no trouble finding space for our bags. Guests with lots of luggage might feel a bit cramped.
The bathroom was clean, modern, and roomier than we expected.
Though I love many things about Europe, the showers typically don’t make the list. Mainly because they always seem to be designed for Hobbits. Having enough room to properly shampoo my hair is typically a challenge, let alone shaving my legs. Thankfully, the fabulous rain shower at the citizenM was an exception. After a long travel day, taking a steaming hot shower was an unfathomable luxury.
The citizenM has a 24-hour restaurant and bar onsite. Food options range from a full, hot buffet to prepackaged meals and snacks.
The buffet looked delicious and surprisingly healthy (Granted, I live in the South where macaroni and cheese is considered a vegetable…), but at 17 €, it was a bit too expensive for us. Instead, we purchased prepackaged meals that were quite tasty. We also bought a package of chocolate cookies to munch on while we binge-watched movies in bed later that night (if that’s not the high life, I don’t know what is!).
Though the bed was enormous and the rain shower pure heaven, what really set the citizenM apart for us was the cool vibe. From the moment we walked through the door we could tell it was a special place.
Hanging out in the lobby area feels like being in our most stylish friend’s living room. The room décor is both modern and cozy. The check in/check out process is quick and efficient. Overall, the citizenM is a destination in itself.
We paid 133€ for our stay, and it was absolutely worth the price. The hotel is the perfect place to rest up for a long trip, and its location is unbeatable for those with early morning flights. We can’t wait to return.
